ABOUT ME
Deathbear is a three piece band made up of long time friends Chris Mariscal, drums, Aaron Swink, guitar, and Shea Kelly, bass. The members of Deathbear come from all different musical backgrounds and run the gamut of musical influences, lending a unique melodic and multi-rhythmic approach to their compositions.
Chris Marsical grew up the child of a classically trained pianist and an avid guitarphile. At the age of ten, his father gave him his first guitar, but it wasn't until a few years later when his friends also started playing (more specifically, started playing better than him) that he started taking music seriously. Chris has spent most of his adult life playing all over California with various bands, even having a short stint as a session player for Warner Bros. Records. In addition to Deathbear, still plays shows with novelty hardcore specialists Tabernacle.
Chris' major musical influences are Jimmy Page, Buzz Osbourne, Mike Campbell and Bill Nelson, and his favorite drummers are Bun E. Carlos, Dale Crover, John Bonham, and Nicko McBrain.
Aaron Swink's approach to music has always been based around exploration. Being self taught, Aaron has a unique ear for hearing melodies and approaching composition. As a teenager, Aaron started attending punk rock shows and eventually started hosting shows at his parents' house. His first band COCW eventually transformed into Gun, and Aaron started to learn the guitar. Aaron also took to playing synthesizer in the pop-synth band Maxi Zoon Dweebies around the same time. Aaron's guitar influences include Isaac Brock, Omar Rodriguez and Doug Martsch.
Ever since Shea Kelly started playing piano at five years old, she has been addicted to music. In sixth grade, a police officer brought a reel to reel to her catholic school in Colorado and played Led Zeppelin backwards to show how they wrote music for the devil. “Stairway to Heaven” warbling backwards was a siren's song to her ears, and immediately Shea knew her calling. She soon added guitar to her repertoire, and when the need arose, she learned how to play the bass as well. Shea has spent the past three extremely busy years performing with Dirty Pink Slips, Deathbear, and has toured the all over the country with Bad Assets. Her major influences are Frank Zappa, Tony Williams, Matt Holliman and Evan Reiss.
